The actual cutting of what we now know as The Eglinton Canal began in March 1848. It provided much needed work during the Famine. It began at the Corrib Club and entered the sea near the Claddagh Church. The filling they dug out was used to fill terraces in UCG (which was also being built at the time) and to fill in the causeway behind Claddagh Quay. The Claddagh Basin and the Claddagh Quays were constructed to cater for the 300 boats which were operating out of the Claddagh at the time.

The Claddagh is Galway’s most historic district, its foundation pre-dating that of the city, and it has always been proud of its native traditions and identity. Yet not only is the Claddagh a vivid link to Galway’s ancient past; the Claddagh National School, with its multi-racial student population, symbolises the cosmopolitan Galway of today while preparing its pupils for the Galway of tomorrow.

A unique, hand-painted jigsaw featuring five Kings of the Claddagh sailing past the Long Walk in a Galway Hooker will be unveiled in Claddagh National School this Friday, April 7 at 10am.

The Christmas special concert will take place in the Galway Cathedral on Sunday (December 11) in aid of the Galway Simon Community.
